THE BURDEN

A Film By Conor Spencer

Official Selection - Kendal Mountain Festival 2026

The Burden is a documentary short following trail runners as they take on a 42.1km trail run across the West Pennine Moors, carrying a 20kg sandbag between them — a physical representation of the weight of poor mental health, and the importance of sharing it.

The film explores grief, male mental health, community and what can happen when people are willing to carry some of the weight for each other.

Production involved intimate interviews, observational filming, training sessions, aerial cinematography and covering the 42.1km event itself across the moors — capturing both its scale and the smaller human moments happening within it.

The approach was deliberately stripped back and documentary-led. I wanted the contributors' experiences to lead the film, supported by cinematic imagery that places their stories within the landscape where the challenge unfolds.

The project represents the kind of work I want to create with brands, organisations and individuals: visually considered films built around real people, genuine experiences and stories worth telling.
